Eduardo Miroglio Rose de Noir

the seductressPinot noir wines have received fabulous ratings from wine connoisseurs all over the world; Vanity Fair’s wine reviewer Joel Fleischman maintains it is "the most romantic of wines, with so voluptuous a perfume, so sweet an edge, and so powerful a punch that, like falling in love, they make the blood run hot and the soul wax embarrassingly poetic," whilst Master Sommelier Madeline Triffon describes it as "sex in a glass" and to OenoStyle’s Peter Richardsson it is his  "seductive yet fickle mistress!" For this reason we decided to take a look at one of Bulgaria’s most popular pinot wines, boutique vintner Eduardo Miroglio’s  Rose de Noir.

Restaurant Uno Enoteca

inside the restaurant the barThe wines of Bulgaria have mostly been impressing me with their value but not their complexity, to say the least. This has become so universally true that I have coined the phrase "Bulgarian Soft" to refer to them in my notes. It was time to venture forth to one of the better restaurants in the country to see what throwing money at it would bring.

What follows is a detailed review of the restaurant, but only a generic review of of the wines. The restaurant that received our patronage this evening was the Uno Enoteca in Sofia, Bulgaria.

Black Sea Gold Muscat P 2000

nazdraveIf you are a lover of white wine, then a bottle of Black Sea Gold's Muscat P is worth adding to your wine cellar. Produced in the famous wine growing region of Pomorie, it is rapidly becoming one of the most popular Muscat Ottonel wines in the country.

The Winery

Pomorie is a renowned wine-producing region located on the southeastern Black Sea coast and for the local inhabitants here vine growing and wine production are the main source of income. The Black Sea Gold Winery has continued the wine producing skills passed down through the ages harnessing them with contemporary technology and advances in the scientific field of viticulture - the result is a varied stable of quality wines.

Windy Hills Cabernet Sauvignon 2006

chateau windy hillsWindy Hills lies on the main Sofia to Bourgas highway close to the town of Sliven and is renowned for its cultivation of high quality red grapes. Not many wineries can boast four star accommodations on-site. In front of the modern winery in the centre of the vineyard there is an impressive hotel full of traditional architecture and style. The hotel offers 11 comfortable double rooms, where guests can relax after a day’s wine tasting and sightseeing.

Chocolate Heaven

the owners of the jeff de bruges chocolatier sofiaQuest Bulgaria recently took a very important fact-finding tasting session to the Jeff De Bruges Chocolatier in Sofia, a lovely shop run with dedication and devotion by Cyril and Ralitza Cressy.

Cyril, a Frenchman by birth, came to Bulgaria in 1997 as part of his French military duty. Originally posted to Bulgaria for just one year, he spent two hours a day teaching French at the Military Academy. However, Cyril loved his work so much that he asked to continue for a second year. During this time he fell in love with Bulgaria and its people, and he decided to stay on in the country after his military duty had finished, learn the language and marry his girlfriend, Ralitza.

A Wine Time!

Bessa Valley VineyardQuest Bulgaria member, David Barker, relates his own 'quest' to find fine wines in Bulgaria, and his eventual visit to Bessa Valley Vineyard. "Ever since we bought our holiday home, ‘Kozle’, in the village of Dospei, Borovets region, I have been in search of a good vineyard to visit. Decades of holidaying in France prior to buying our place, meant I’d become accustomed to ensuring that there was a vineyard or two to stop at during our October half term family holiday.

My research on the net had thrown up the Melnik wine area in the southwest, but this region is hardly on our doorstep.

Chateau Souverain Cabernet Sauvignon

Chateau Shivatchevo Cabernet SauvignonA Bulgarian wine that boasts as much about the barrel as the region must be something special. In fact, the barrel is made from American oak and it plays a significant role in bringing out the wine’s unique flavour.

The Cabernet Sauvignon grape is one we all know, having been a staple in many wine-producing regions for years. However, this grape thrives in warmer climes and is particularly well suited to the Balkan’s southern slopes.

After one year in the oak cask, this wine combines two very unique aromas’ which is the result of this cheeky grape mixing with the very natural properties of its oak casing.

Looking at this wine is an experience in itself; it is a deep and sumptuous ruby red colour. When it comes to taste, this wine packs plenty of punch. The rich flavour and year spent in the oak cask pays dividends when on the palette. Chateau Shivatchevo has a darkly sweet flavour, which brings to mind coffee, Morello cherry and vanilla - all the things we love!
