Latest Employment Stats


The National Statistic Institute (NSI) have released the latest figures regarding employment in Bulgaria from a survey conducted in the second quarter of this year. The figures show that the jobless total has fallen 30,600 compared with the same period in 2007. Unemployment in April to June this year was a total of 5.8 percent. In rural areas this was higher at 9.6 percent, with only 4.6 in urban areas.

The total economically active population, aged 15 to 64, stood at nearly 3,522,000, reaching 63.9 percent, up 2.3 percent on the same period last year.

Employment amongst older age groups is increasing faster than amongst the young. The employment rate in the 55 - 64 age bracket was 45.8 percent, up 3.1 percent on a year ago.

In the 15 to 64 ages, the economically inactive population accounted for just over 1,655,000, or 32 percent of the population in that age group. About half of these do not wish to work and are not seeking employment. This is due to personal reasons, studying, or family situation. Those who have been unemployed for more than three years account for 9.1 percent of the unemployed. This has decreased compared with the same period last year.

The breakdown of those in employment is : 3.6 percent are employers, 8.1 percent are self-employed, 87.3 percent are employees, and 1 percent are unpaid family workers.

With the decline in public sector employment, private sector employment has increased by 6.7 percent. Services employ 55 percent of all employees, industry 37 percent and agriculture / forestry 8 percent.
