Lesson Five - questions and future tense

This month we will take further steps towards building confidence. Let’s see how far you have progressed after the previous 4 lessons.

Remember, just reading these lessons will not make you fluent in Bulgarian! Always set aside some regular, quiet time for your study and practice, always have a dictionary to hand (as I may just throw in a word or two I've not used before!), and keep your own detailed notes ... good luck!

Build Strength

With the vocabulary you now have under your belt, you should now be able to translate the following sentences:

1. We wish you a pleasant trip and stay in Bulgaria
2. You can speak Bulgarian well now
3. I want to buy a two-room house in the centre of Sofia
4. We live in Bulgaria now. We have a three-room flat at the seaside

Because there are so many possibilities for creating sentences, I shall write underneath ten easy sentences for you to try and translate:

Solution to last months Practice Makes Perfect exercise:

There is a summer kitchen in the yard. Two-room house and new construction.

Make Progress

Learning how to make questions in Bulgarian ... just look at the following phrases and see how to make questions ... try to translate them all.

1. Как сте? Kak ste?
2. Откъде сте? Otkade ste?
3. Как се казвате? Kak se kazvate?
4. Къде е офисът Ви? Kade e ofisat vi?
5. В колко часа тръгваш? V kolko chasa tragvash?
6. Колко е часът? Kolko e chasat?
7. Ти бързаш ли? Ti barzash li?
8. Къде отивате сега? Kade otivate sega?

(как = how, куде = where, колко = how much)

Making a question without using an interrogative word (what, who, why, where, when, etc.), requires the use of “ ли” (always unstressed) and immediately placed after the verb. For instance:

Говорите ли англиски? Govorite li angliski? Do you speak English?

Имате ли сигари? Imate li sigari? Do you have cigarettes?

See, not too bad!

Note: that whenever making a question with the verb "to be", "ли" will always be placed before the verb and not after.
