Lesson Eight - past tense, days of the week

I hope you managed to cope with Lesson 7 and that the past tense does not seem as frightening as before. We have already said and repeated many times that the key to learning any language is to go at a steady pace instead of rushing things and ending up nowhere!

Let's see how you managed with the exercises in the last lesson and see how much progress you have made with the past tense.

Build Strength

Translation of the sentences from Bulgarian into English:

Ходихте в Рила заедно - We went to Rila together
Да, разбира се - Yes, of course
Закусихме рано и тръгнахме - We had breakfast early and left
Видяхме приятели там - We saw some friends there
Всичко беше много весело - Everything was very lively
След това ние с Иво ходихме в Самоков - After that, we went to Samokov with Ivo
Беше един приятен ден за всички - It was a nice day for all of us.

We then asked you to find the appropriate ending for the words shown in bold:

Вчера ние тръгнахме рано за София, защото времето беше много хубаво. Имаше много работа там в офис. След това ходихме заедно на гарата. Искахме да купим билет на влак за брат ми.

How did you do?

Make Progress

We shall carry on with the use of the 'aorist', since it is quite a big part of your being able to speak in the past tense.
Before going any further with that, I would like to introduce the days of the week to help us build some sentences.

Monday: Понеделник Ponedelnik
Tuesday: Вторник Vtornik
Wednesday: Сряда Sryada
Thursday: Четвъртък Chetvartak
Friday: Петък Petak
Saturday: Събота Sabota
Sunday: Неделя Nedelya

In order to translate: 'on + the day of the week', always use “в” but remember that in some cases, you’ll have to use “във” if the word that immediately follows starts with в or ф.

For example:

On Tuesday - във Вторник
On Wednesday - в Сряда

You have acquired a lot of verbs by now and we’ll make you use them in sentences built with the past tense called “aorist”. If you have forgotten some of the verbs already, please refer to the previous lessons to get help.

Here is a list of verbs to help you understand and make sentences:

To begin: започвам - zapotshvam
To work: работя - rabotya
To enter: влезам - vlezam
To ask: попитам - popitam
To have lunch: обядвам - obyadvam
To see: видя - vidya
To have breakfast: закусвам - zakusvam
To go on foot: ходя - hodya

Using the above, print off this page and write example sentences in Bulgarian and English using the aorist along with the days of the week:

Practice makes perfect

Once again, I have chosen to keep this section as light as possible since the knowledge acquired in the last lesson and this lesson requires a lot of attention. You’ll find it easier this way.

All the following sentences use the aorist. Translate them into English:

1. Захознахме да работим рано - Zapoznahme da rabotim rano

2. В понеделник бях в София -V ponedelnik byah v Sofia.

3. После това бях в Пловдив за три дена -Posle tova byah v Plovdiv za tri dena,

4. Един човек влезе в един хотел и попита цената на стаята -Еdin tshovek vleze v edin hotel i popita tsenata na stayata.

5. Какво видя вчера в Пловдив ? - Kakvo vidya vtshera v Plovdiv ?

6. Обядвахме в къщти - Obyadvahme b kashti.

Remember that most words will now be found unstressed to encourage your having a go at putting the stress on the right syllable. Only the new words will have it from now on.

До скоро! Catherine
