No Smoking in Bulgaria

The no smoking policy will take place in Bulgaria from the start of the New Year.

Amendments of the health act were made and issued earlier this month. Although a full smoking ban was placed for July 2010, it was delayed by the current cabinet of the citizens of European development known as GERB.

The new restrictions will be enforced from the 1st January 2011, and certain rules are in place for smoking areas in bars, coffee shops and restaurants to ensure adequate ventilation. Smaller concerns less than 50sqm have the option to be either smoking or no smoking ,however if a smoking option is chosen no under 18 year olds will be allowed in any indoor smoking areas.
Larger establishments will have to provide an area of at least 50% for non smokers. Nightclubs are excluded from the ban, and it will be allowed in all relevant of size.

Inspections will begin from when the new law starts in January and fines for owners will range from 500 LV TO 10 000 LV for smoking violations.
