The Cultural Capital - Sofia

The mayor of Bulgaria's capital Sofia, Yordanka Fandakova announced this week that she

is doing everything within her power to put forward the city's chance of becoming Europe's cultural capital in 2019.

The European Capital of Cultural title is awarded by the European Union for one year and throughout the year a series of organized cultural events are held with a strong European aspect.

The priority of the title will be for Sofia's cultural developments and the fact that the work force has doubled in the past two years and employs almost 89 000 people, of this figure 54 000 work in Sofia, according to the country data. In Sofia there are future plans for further investment into archaeology excavations and preserving the cities cultural developments, and with these job statistics it proves that it is worth the investment.
There are over 40 cities nominated for the title including some other Bulgarian cities including Varna, Burgas, Plovdiv and Ruse and the decision for the award will be made in 2014.
