Bulgaria`s Healthy Honey

Six Bulgarian cities: Sofia, Varna, Plovdiv, Burgas and Star Zagora have this week be promoting the national week of honey and bee products. The association of Bulgarian beekeepers BGNES aim is to make Bulgarian`s more aware of the beneficial properties found in the natural product.

At the moment, Bulgarian`s only tend to use honey as a sweetener, and are unaware that honey is packed full of vitamins and minerals that are needed for a healthy immune system, especially through the winter months.

Bulgaria`s geographical location and mild climate for up to 7 months of the year from March to September allows a selection of honey plants to provide the necessary requirements for bees. Bulgaria`s natural flora also helps determine the unique flavour of the honey produced.

It is also common in rural regions for people to keep their own beehives and make honey, which many will sell locally.

The Bulgarian Beekeepers' Union make between 60 and 65 million leva per year from domestic and export sales. Bulgarian honey is well known world wide and is sold to countries including Germany, France, Belgium, Austria, Spain, U.S.A, and Cyprus. Germany is the biggest honey lover in the European Union and consumes 20 times more than Bulgarian per month.
