It is an ideal choice for those seeking an elite sea resort with extraordinary natural beauty yet within 40 minutes of the airport. The town is full of character, neither too small nor too large with around 13,000 inhabitants, and has seen a growing reputation as an excellent holiday destination. Strict planning and zoning regulations restrict mass development and enhance its appeal. Not forgetting that at the moment, prices are incredible reasonable. Striking white rocks rise from the sandy beaches with the town perched along winding cobbled streets up through the hills.


Apart from the major tourist attraction of the beautiful ancient palace and the botanical gardens, there are also surrounding world-class signature golf courses. BlackSeaRama is being officially opened in a week by Gary Player, the signature designer himself. Gary Player is also the designer of a second course in the area under construction, Thracian Cliffs, which will be one of the few links courses in the world. Nearby, is a third course designed by Ian Woosnam, Lighthouse.

The yachting fraternity will not be disappointed with numerous events, which included the Kaliakria Cup for the second time this year, with international participants. Just before this event this year, there were loads of very smart fat yachts in the harbour! And, if you don't have your own yacht, then you can easily charter one to explore more of this magnificent coastline by sea.

Shopaholics can fulfill their desires with numerous small boutique shops and the latest news that Carrefour, the largest retailer in Europe, is going to open in nearby Dobrich. If that doesn't satisfy you, then Varna most surely will. This is the most 'western-style' city in Bulgaria and set right on the sea. Only 40 minutes from Balchik and full of charm, shops and numerous eateries.

Just north is Kalakria Resort, a luxurious place where you can enjoy the Totally Romantic Bar, with panoramic sea views, whilst sipping an aperitif sat by the large infinity pool. Different evening events are held throughout the season, including jazz evenings.

When you are tired of watching the yachts bobbing on the waves, their comings and goings, from the luxury of your patio, you can drop south to Albena and lie on the famous beach to top up your tan. After a hard day at the beach, head back to Balchik for dining on the seafront. Hemmingways restaurant remains ever popular and Veroni's pizzeria will have you dancing 'til dawn if you want.
