A Winter Day Out

The cooler but still sunny Bulgarian winter days are upon us and a perfect time for day trips and sight-seeing. Here are 10 of the best days out in Bulgaria so have fun exploring!

Rila Monastery -

The monastery is situated in the Rila Mountains and is located 117 miles away from the capital, Sofia. Rila Monastery is also known as the Monastery of Saint Ivan of Rila and is the largest monastery in Bulgaria.

Bansko -

Not just for skiers, Bansko offers beautiful scenery and is well-suited for tourists. For those staying overnight is prepared to be awakened in the morning by the 15 minute chime of the church bell.

Plovdiv -

Plovdiv is the second largest city in Bulgaria, after Sofia. It lies close to the Maritsa River and is a beautiful cultural city to explore.

Central Balkan National Park -

Situated in the heart of the Balkan Mountains, the park was created in 1991 and is one of the most protected national parks in Europe.

Bankya -

Bankya is famous for its mineral springs and baths and is also the name to a famous brand of bottled water. The natural springs are said to have medicinal purposes.

Haskovo -

Situated in Southern Bulgaria, close to the border of Greece and Turkey. The town is very cultural and you will find a museum and art gallery to explore.

Vratsa -

Has its own national park called 'Vrachanski Balkan', the town is situated near to the Vratsa Mountain and is an ideal place to  explore  on foot. There are caves, a national park and the Vratsa gorge to see.

Stara Zagora -

Famous for producing its beer 'Zagorka' and other beers under license, the large town is ideal for shopping and seeing historical sights.

Sofia -

The capital city offers a variety of great historical sights to see, big shopping malls and is great for night life and concerts.

Ruse -

Situated near to the River Danube, Ruse is a beautiful cosmopolitan town with great tourist attractions including museums and seeing the Danube at sundown.
